The Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC) has recently announced that Abdul Aleem Saqib, also known as Ahmad Hanayesh, a journalist for Radio Azadi covering the northern provinces of Afghanistan and the head of the private Kahkashan Radio in Parwan province, was the victim of an attack by unidentified armed individuals in Islamabad, Pakistan, and has been severely wounded.

The Afghanistan Journalists Center has urged the Pakistani government today, on April 4th, to ensure the security and protection of Afghan migrant journalists as a priority of human rights.

According to the Afghanistan Journalists Center, Mr. Hanayesh was targeted on Thursday at 11:00 PM in the G-6 area of Islamabad, Pakistan, while he was on his way home. Mr Hanayesh was transported to a hospital and suffered severe wounds from gunshot impacts to his leg and head.

Mr. Hanayesh, due to the prevailing restrictions against journalists in Afghanistan, migrated to Pakistan with his family a year ago and currently resides in Islamabad.

The Pakistani police have stated that they will investigate the attack on Mr Hanayesh, the Afghan journalist in Islamabad.

The Afghanistan Journalists Center has denounced this incident and called for the security of the lives of migrant journalists and a fair handling of this event by the Pakistani government.

With the resurgence of the Taliban, some journalists have sought refuge in neighbouring countries out of fear of this ruling group, while others within the country are facing threats and detentions.
