According to a statement from the Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC), Fareedullah Mohammadi, Mitra Majidi, and Nasir Ahmad Salehi, journalists from Tolo News in Kabul and Farah provinces, Mohammad Amin Kawa, a journalist from Hasht-e-Sobh newspaper, and Mohammad Tahir Ahmadi, a journalist from Rokhsana media, were awarded the Afghan Journalist of the Year 1402 prize.

The Afghanistan Journalists Center announced the list of winners of the Journalist of the Year award yesterday, Friday, April 5th, during a ceremony attended by media experts and journalists from various countries in Brussels, the capital of Belgium. Additionally, some journalists and representatives of journalism institutions from Afghanistan and various countries participated both in person and online.

“Despite challenges in the media and journalism sector in the country, more than 50 local and national media outlets from various provinces of the country and international media specifically for Afghanistan competed for the Journalist of the Year award,” AFJC stated.

According to the Center, based on the decision of the jury panel, these five individuals were selected as the winners of the Journalist of the Year award in the 1402 Solar Year.

In the past decade, 17 journalists from various media outlets such as BBC, Hasht-e-Sobh, and several others have received this prestigious award, with five of them being female journalists.

The situation of journalists in Afghanistan is reported to be very dire, with journalists facing not only challenges in reporting but also lacking the right to disseminate and publish truths. Censored information is not readily available to them, and they must consider the red lines of the ruling group.

However, it was previously reported by Reporters Without Borders that Afghanistan is among the most dangerous countries for journalists. Furthermore, the suppression of journalists in Afghanistan has intensified, affecting women the most, both as journalists and as recipients of news.
