Sources close to the Taliban group have reported that Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, the leader of this group, undertook a sudden and uncoordinated nighttime journey to Kabul on Wednesday, May 15, without the knowledge of the officials of this group and the media. During this trip, he met with Sirajuddin Haqqani, the acting Minister of Interior of this group, governors, and some Taliban government officials at the Ministry of Interior building in Kabul.

This journey is taking place amidst deep-seated disagreements within the Taliban, some of which have been publicized, mostly revolving around disputes between Haqqanis and the leader of the Taliban group. These disagreements typically revolve around power distribution and the leader’s directives regarding the governance of the country and the education of girls.

In some instances, members of the Taliban group had accused Hibatullah Akhundzada of monopolizing power, while Sirajuddin Haqqani openly criticized the leadership decisions of this group.

Sirajuddin Haqqani criticized the leadership of this group in a ceremony held in Khost province two years ago, stating: “Monopolizing power and imposing a single viewpoint in favour of the Taliban group is not beneficial.”

Furthermore, during the anniversary ceremony of Mullah Omar’s death last year, he criticized the power monopoly within the Taliban government, saying: “The system should not be so closed and restricted that only members of a seminary see themselves in it.”

Although the primary motivation behind Mullah Hibatullah’s trip to Kabul has not been detailed, it appears that this journey is pursuing significant objectives that have drawn the behind-the-scenes leader of the Taliban’s footsteps to Kabul. However, it remains unclear whether Hibatullah travelled to Kabul to suppress the Haqqanis’ criticisms or out of genuine concern for the potential disintegration of the group’s system.
