Vossorno, a high-ranking official coordinating humanitarian aid efforts for the United Nations (UNOCHA), has articulated that the Taliban have deprived approximately 1.4 million women and adolescent girls in Afghanistan of their educational rights.

She stated, “The constraints imposed by the Taliban on educated Afghan women have added a layer of complexity to the humanitarian aid delivery process in Afghanistan. Approximately 1.4 million women and adolescent girls are still under the prohibition of education.”

This comes as the National Examinations Administration of Afghanistan, on Thursday, May 23, announced during a press conference the initiation of the nationwide Kankor University entrance examinations without the presence of girls. This marks the second consecutive year that female students have been excluded from accessing this examination.

Fatima Sharifi, one of the candidates for the university entrance exams, like hundreds of other girls, mourns being deprived of the exam for the second consecutive year.

“For many years, I awaited such a day, envisioning that successfully passing the Kankor exam would bring me closer to my aspirations. Nevertheless, everything has taken a turn in the opposite direction. Today, instead of preparing to participate in the exam, I find myself seated at home, shedding tears over the dissipation of my goals and aspirations,” Fatima Sharifi.

Following her four-day voyage to Afghanistan, Ms. Vossorno urged during a press briefing, “We are running out of time. The longer we wait, millions more children will come under the influence and will have a greater impact on society.”

She continues to implore government officials in Afghanistan to revoke the educational and occupational restrictions against women and girls in the country.

While the global community repeatedly emphasizes the importance of upholding human rights, especially women’s rights, freedom of expression, education, and inclusive governance, the realm of higher education for girls beyond the sixth grade in Afghanistan remains sealed off.
