For over two years, girls in Afghanistan have been deprived of attending schools, with 961 days passing since higher-grade female students were barred from accessing education. Despite numerous appeals for the reopening of girls’ schools during this period, the gates of education remain closed to girls, leaving them in uncertainty and distress about their future.

One student, Sara Sultani, who has been deprived of attending school for two years, expressed her frustration, stating, “For two years, we have been deprived of our right to education, our dreams and aspirations have been shattered. We have become homebound, overwhelmed by the stress and anxiety of an uncertain and education-deprived future. Life in Afghanistan is like a slow death for all girls deprived of their most basic rights, even the right to education, which is a fundamental right for both men and women.”

Meanwhile, over the past two years since the closure of girls’ schools, some students have been pushed into early marriages due to familial traditions. Shakila, a twelfth-grade student, like many other girls, has been deprived of education and has been engaged to her cousin during this period due to family customs.

“After the schools closed, we all became confined to our homes. They told my father that a good daughter should not stay at home and should get married early. Now, with no school or education, there is no excuse left for not marrying off the daughters. That’s why six months after not going to school, I got engaged to my cousin,” Shakila said.

Recently, Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, warned through a tweet that depriving girls of education exposes them to early marriages, violence, and exploitation.

961 days ago, on September 18, 2021, an order was issued prohibiting girls above the sixth grade from attending school, leading to continued education deprivation. Despite promises of school reopenings, no concrete actions have been taken to date.
