Some women in Ghor province, who are the heads of their households, say that due to economic hardships, they have faced many difficulties during the Ramadan month, and now due to the high prices in the markets and the limited income they earn through labour, they cannot afford to prepare for Eid.

Safiya is one of the women who, in Ghor province, earns a living for her family of five through embroidery, and she has not been able to buy new clothes for herself and her children for Eid yet. She mentions that due to poverty and financial constraints, she cannot afford to buy dried fruits or prepare an Eid table.

She says, “My husband has gone to Iran, and I am forced to work here and provide for my family. I do embroidery, but the money I earn is not enough to solve our problems. We had a very difficult Ramadan, there was nothing to eat, and now with Eid approaching, the children want new clothes, and I can’t even buy one piece of clothing.”

Nargis, another woman who works as a labourer in others houses, mostly doing cleaning and laundry to provide for her family, says, “I am the breadwinner of my family and I have to find a way to provide for myself and my children, which is why I go to others houses to do laundry, but the money I earn is not enough, especially now that everyone is preparing for Eid, prices are high. I couldn’t even buy clothes for the children, let alone sweets and fruits for Eid.”

After restrictions on women’s work by the Taliban and a decrease in humanitarian aid in Afghanistan, a large number of women have lost their jobs and are facing severe economic hardships.

This comes as on the eve of Eid al-Fitr, some female heads of households in Ghor province are facing economic challenges and cannot prepare for and purchase items for Eid.
