The United Nations Women’s section has stated in a report that the restrictions imposed by the Taliban over the past two years have had a negative impact on all aspects of women and girls’ lives in Afghanistan.

The report indicates that the Taliban’s prohibition on education in Afghanistan has led to a 25% increase in underage marriages of girls, an upsurge of up to 45% in early childbearing, and a potential 50% rise in maternal mortality.

This report, based on consultations and interviews with over 700 Afghan women from 2022 to 2024, has been prepared with the assistance of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

The report is published at a time when women and girls in Afghanistan have faced significant constraints over the past two years. Following the imposition of restrictive laws, aspiring female students have been deprived of their right to education, leading to a considerable loss of employed women and their involvement in their communities.

Moreover, as a result of girls being confined to their homes, the statistics of marriages have surged. Some of these girls state that they have been married due to familial traditions and pressures. As mentioned in the UN Women’s report, underage marriages in Afghanistan have increased by 25%.
