Following the ban on girls and women from education and work, some female students and learners in Herat have turned to learning various professions such as painting, tailoring, and establishing various workshops.

Sanam Hakimi, one of the female learners, has embraced the art of painting after the restrictions against girls’ education were imposed. She says, “Painting gives me a sense of liberation. Freedom from all pains, limitations, and distance from the university. It has been nearly two years since we stopped going to university. During this time, to have an activity, I turned to the art of painting and I hope that one day all these limitations will be removed so that we can freely study and work again.”

Some of the girls engaged in a tailoring workshop expressed that they sew to prevent facing mental illnesses and to support their families financially, advocating for the removal of restrictions against women and girls regarding work and education.

Shukria Hashemi, a female student, mentions that after the closure of schools and a long hiatus in academic activities, she has now embarked on the art of tailoring.

“We used to go to school, had lofty goals for our future, and every day we headed towards our studies with hope and aspirations. But after the closure of schools, I was deeply saddened. To overcome this despondency and avoid becoming housebound, I joined a tailoring workshop and I am now occupied with work,” Shukria said.

Samira Ahadi, a student in the eleventh grade, describes her low spirits after schools were closed. She says, “After the schools were closed, I lost all my hopes. A few days ago, when I saw the tears of sixth-grade girls who could no longer go to school, my pain was renewed. Since I had no occupation, I joined a tailoring workshop and I tried to learn something by learning tailoring.”

These girls have turned to the art of tailoring and painting while 973 days have passed since the closure of girls’ schools and nearly two years of the ban on girls attending universities in the country. The deprivation of girls from education has garnered significant reactions, yet there is no news of the reopening of universities and school gates to girls.
