Malalai Helmandi, the Chief Executive Officer of Helmand Solar Company, expressed her views at a two-day conference in Bahrain, hosted by the United Nations, aimed at supporting women entrepreneurs and highlighting the importance of female investors in conflict-affected countries. She mentioned that for 47 years, Afghanistan has been engulfed in war, which has had the most detrimental impact on mothers, who are the backbone and source of tranquillity for their families.

During the conference, Mrs. Helmandi stated, “I have concluded that families thrive when, at their core, there are stable, capable, and powerful mothers who are focused on earning a living by acquiring income-generating skills. A mother in Afghanistan succeeds when she dedicates the most time and effort to the growth and upbringing of her child, to present a healthy child to herself and her community in the future.”

She also added that Helmand Solar Company has established greenhouses for women affected by war and crises following the fall of the previous government.

Hamid Heermand, Mrs. Helmandi’s husband, who was also present at the conference, stated, “Eighty percent of women and girls in Afghanistan have become unemployed due to recent political developments and have lost their duties.”

It is worth mentioning that in addition to Afghan women entrepreneurs, women entrepreneurs and investors from other countries such as Iraq, Sudan, Palestine, and Algeria also participated in this conference.

This comes at a time when Afghan women, with the return of the Taliban to power, are deprived of their most fundamental rights. They are prohibited from education, employment, travel, public parks, external bathing facilities, beauty salons, social activities, and even from attending public gatherings.

These obstacles have dealt a devastating blow to women entrepreneurs in the country, especially those women who are the breadwinners of their families and whose capabilities have been invested in for years to support their families, but are now unemployed and are unjustly prohibited from working without any valid reason.
