We, the Women’s Media Advocacy Group, express our concern about the enduring and alarming situation faced by women under the rule of the Taliban. The profound and irreparable damages inflicted upon half of society are inhumane. We urge the global community and the United Nations to take serious and practical action to address this situation.

In the past two years, we have witnessed a series of inhumane and misogynistic actions by the ruling group that have marginalized women, depriving them of all their fundamental rights. These actions include restricting the rights and freedoms of women, torturing and detaining women activists, brutally suppressing women’s civil protests, harassing and intimidating women in public places for their attire, and marginalizing women from all social, cultural, economic, and political spheres.

Over the past two years, the Taliban has issued orders and decrees that have imposed further restrictions on women. These include prohibitions on education, employment, travel, use of recreational facilities, free choice of clothing, presence in the media with common attire, and many other prohibitions and deprivations that have turned Afghanistan into a prison for women and other citizens.

These restrictions and deprivations of the human rights of women and girls have caused severe and irreparable harm to them, resulting in the loss of fundamental rights and human life for many of them. This situation has led to Afghan women and girls being subjected to severe violence and oppression, even being deprived of their most basic rights and freedoms.

Many women and girls who were advocating for their rights and freedoms are still languishing in Taliban prisons. For instance, Manizha Sediqi and many other protesting women have been subjected to torture in Taliban prisons for months. In a recent incident, the Taliban arbitrarily detained four members of a family, including three sisters and a brother, and transferred them to an unknown location, two of whom are underage girls.

Furthermore, the recent statements and declarations by Taliban leaders are deeply concerning. These statements indicate a further radicalization of the Taliban towards women, showing a lack of respect for the rights of women and girls. These actions have made the situation of women even more alarming and dire.

Given this tragic situation, we expect the media and international organizations to pay serious and comprehensive attention to the plight of Afghan women and take necessary actions to preserve and protect their rights. We also urge the international community and the United Nations to promptly take effective measures to address the situation of women in Afghanistan and prevent further deterioration of their conditions. We call upon the United Nations, especially the Security Council, to exert practical pressure on Taliban leaders by implementing punitive measures and sanctions, holding them accountable for their actions against Afghan women and citizens.
