Dr. Sima Samar, the former head of the Independent Human Rights Commission of Afghanistan, has been awarded the “President” medal from an esteemed American institution, Tufts University.
This accolade bestowed upon Sima Samar by Tufts University, one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the United States, stands as a testament to her unwavering efforts in the advancement of human rights.
Tufts University, a private research university in Massachusetts founded in 1852, specializes in providing comprehensive academic services to its community.
The president of this university, during a commencement ceremony, expressed that the highest honor of the institution, known as the “President” medal, is conferred upon Sima Samar in recognition of her tireless endeavors toward human rights improvement.
Mrs. Samar, who was a speaker at this event, highlighted the reinstatement of the Taliban in Afghanistan, leading to the re-implementation of restrictions on female students from the sixth grade onwards. Women are deprived of even their most fundamental rights and are systematically excluded from societal participation.
“It is truly an honor to be here with you. I witness your pursuit of rights and goals with admiration. You possess a high privilege of accessing a reputable university and exercising your rights. However, the people in Afghanistan have once again fallen under the control of the most extremist group of ignorance, where women and girls face severe limitations. They are stripped of education, schooling, and livelihood,” Sima Samar said.
It is worth mentioning that Mrs. Samar, a politician, physician, human rights activist, and Afghanistan’s first Minister of Women’s Affairs, has previously been the recipient of prestigious international awards.
