Abbas Stanikzai: “A leader who does not live among his people is isolated, and his government will not endure.”

Abbas Stanikzai, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Taliban government, stated at a conference, citing examples from the early Islamic period and the presence of the Prophet of Islam and the Rightly Guided Caliphs among the people, that: “A leader who does not live among his people is isolated, and his government will not endure.”

These remarks may be directed at Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, the leader of the Taliban in Kandahar, who has not been seen in public for quite some time.

After the Taliban’s rule in Afghanistan, Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada was chosen as the leader of this group and issued most political and social commands and directives from Kandahar to the statesmen and people. These directives have been predominantly extreme and strict. The prohibition of women’s presence in political and various social spheres, the ban on girls attending schools and universities, and still the prohibition of women in government offices are among the directives issued by Mullah Hibatullah, who has deemed the presence of women in politics and society contrary to Islamic law.

Although whispers of differences between the hardline Taliban spectrum and the moderate group within this group have been heard, this explicit criticism has been made by one of the leaders of the Taliban government in Kabul. Nevertheless, it is not clear what has caused these differences to be brought out from the Taliban’s think tank, but what is considered significant and fundamental is that a soft and delicate rift among the Taliban has emerged, which could gradually deepen and create further distance between the hardline and moderate factions of the Taliban.
