Taliban Aims to Block Facebook in Afghanistan
Najibullah Haqqani, the acting Minister of Communications and Information Technology of the Taliban group, has recently announced the finalization of a plan to block the social network Facebook in Afghanistan.

Najibullah Haqqani, the acting Minister of Communications and Information Technology of the Taliban group, has recently announced the finalization of a plan to block the social network Facebook in Afghanistan.

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology of the Taliban raised this issue on Saturday night, April 6th, in an interview with Tolo News television.

“Youth in Afghanistan are in a situation where they are scientifically weak and the majority of them are illiterate. They waste their time and money on social networks, which benefits the owners of these companies and harms the nation. It has been decided to restrict and block Facebook in Afghanistan for this reason,” Haqqani said.

These statements by the Minister of Communications and Information Technology of the Taliban come at a time when Meta, the owner company of Facebook, has not granted this group permission to use this social network based on the United States counter-terrorism laws and has blocked accounts related to the authorities and members of this group.

The Minister of Communications and Technology did not provide further information on the exact timing of the implementation of the plan to block Facebook in Afghanistan. Previously, the Taliban had not taken action to block social networks in Afghanistan.

This is happening while the Taliban group, since coming to power in Afghanistan, has imposed various restrictions on citizens’ access to independent and free media and has detained and imprisoned many individuals solely for expressing critical views on social networks.
