Vanessa Fraizer, the new President of the United Nations Security Council, asserts that Gender Apartheid, which applies to Afghanistan as well, should be added to the Convention on the Prevention of Crimes against Humanity.

Ms. Fraizer, who is also the permanent representative of Malta to the United Nations, stated to reporters on Monday, April 1, that the situation in Afghanistan is crucial for the Security Council. She further added, “Gender Apartheid applies at least to Afghanistan.”

The new President of the United Nations Security Council has also mentioned in her remarks that a Special Representative of the United Nations for Afghanistan should be appointed as soon as possible. However, it is said that the Taliban oppose the appointment of a Special Representative of the United Nations for Afghanistan.

Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan is one of the challenging issues, to the extent that on September 22, 2023, the United Nations held a session on the status of Afghan women under the title of “Fighting Gender Apartheid” on the sidelines of the seventy-eighth session of the General Assembly of this organization in New York.

This United Nations session was attended by the permanent representation of Afghanistan to the United Nations, representatives of South Africa, Malta, and the Dominican Republic, as well as representatives of countries and human rights activists, including Richard Bent, the Special Rapporteur of the United Nations.

Furthermore, in this session, Nasir Ahmad Faieq, the acting representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations, spoke about the systematic elimination of Afghan women and girls from society and the violation of their fundamental and human rights. Expressing concern about the current situation, he stated that the restrictions imposed on women and girls by the Taliban will have far-reaching negative consequences for the entire Afghan society.
