The graduation ceremony of hundreds of male students who have graduated from Herat University in 2021, 2022 and 2023 was held without the participation of female students by the Herat University Directorate in the presence of Neda Mohammad Nadim, Acting Minister of Higher Education, member of the Taliban.

Graduation of male students is celebrated while all female students were forced to leave university and college in the last two years and were deprived of their right to education.

Sara Mohammadi, one of the female students at Herat University, who could not finish the university because of the educational restrictions imposed by the Taliban, complains about the graduation party being held only for male students.

Sara says: “Today I witness the graduation of boys who we started university together and studied together in the same class. But today, I am deprived of education because I am a girl, and my classmates have a graduation party without the presence of girls. I wish I could say how painful it is.”

Mursal Salehi, another suspended female student at Herat University, wants the gates of the university to be opened to female students as soon as possible and expresses concern that the graduation of male students is being celebrated without the presence of girls.

Neda Mohammad Nadim, Acting Minister of Higher Education under the control of the Taliban, has assured the improvement of the quality of education in the country’s universities and says that in addition to the construction of standard buildings in a number of universities, all the universities of the country will be equipped with standard libraries and laboratories.

“It is a cause for concern that girls are deprived of education while the graduation party of male students is celebrated. We should have the right to go to school, university and achieve our goals just like boys”, Mursal said.

At the same time as the graduation ceremony of hundreds of male students in Herat, it is said that one of the health education institutes in this province was closed due to the mixed gender of girls and boys and not observing the Islamic hijab, and female students were not allowed to enter this institute.

After the fall of the government in Afghanistan, it has been two years that the lives of Afghan women and girls have faced many challenges, such as closing the gates of schools and universities to girls, banning women from working in government and non-government offices, and closing women’s hair salons, these are the restrictions.
