Reporters Without Borders (RSF) expressed concern over the restriction of access for women to media and the increasing restrictions and authoritarian directives imposed by the Taliban on journalists. The organization called on Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, the leader of the Taliban, to put an end to these actions.

“The silencing of the voices of female audiences of media in Khost, the prohibition of publishing images of officials in Kandahar, and severe restrictions on coverage for female journalists in the country are all alarming signs of the Taliban’s ideological rigidity, which particularly targets female journalists,” RSF stated.

Some female journalists in Afghanistan who are still engaged in media activities say that conditions for them have become more difficult and restrictive than ever before, making it challenging for them to continue their work freely.

Sahar Mohammadi (pseudonym) is one of the female journalists in Afghanistan who works as a field reporter for a local media outlet and finds the challenges and restrictions facing journalists worrisome.

“Journalists in Afghanistan, especially female journalists, face numerous challenges. We cannot easily access the information we need, we cannot share in every program, there is gender discrimination in the media, female presenters must cover their faces, and female journalists struggle with low wages,” Sahar said.

Meanwhile, a meeting was held on the sidelines of the sixty-eighth session of the Commission on the Status of Women of the United Nations (UNCSW) to examine the situation of female journalists under Taliban rule. Representatives present at this meeting expressed concern about the current situation of female journalists in Afghanistan and the information dissemination process.

The Permanent Mission of Denmark to the United Nations, on its social media page, stated that female journalists in Afghanistan resist oppression every day and put their lives at risk to produce media content.
