KANDAHAR, Feb 21 (Afghanistan Women’s News Agency) – A group of female journalists, in response to the order of banning photography by the Taliban governor in Kandahar, denounced it as a setback for civil liberties and a serious blow to press freedom and freedom of speech. The group of female journalists in a press release issued on Tuesday, February 20, and shared a copy of it with the Afghanistan Women’s News Agency, stated that the order of the Taliban governor in Kandahar is profoundly regressive and in violation of all principles of human rights and freedom of speech.

“Such restrictions lead to increased self-censorship, further limitations on freedom of speech, and reduced media access to information. This uncivilized act results in severe restrictions on the media and journalists, weakening the role of the media in providing accurate information and conveying news correctly to the public.”

According to these female journalists, the ban on women’s photography is being enforced at a time when women in Afghanistan are deprived of basic rights such as the right to education, work, sightseeing, travel, and other political, cultural, social, and economic rights.

“We, the female journalists of Afghanistan, unequivocally condemn this decision and urge the United Nations to exert pressure on the Taliban to immediately revoke this ban.”

These female journalists in Afghanistan called on the United Nations to cancel this order and stressed support for the rights of journalists and media.
