Simultaneously with more than a year passing since the closure of universities to girls, a large number of female students in Afghanistan have turned to online universities and continue their unfinished education through this means.

Sama Sarwari, a second-year student of the Faculty of Economics, had become housebound after the Taliban issued the order prohibiting girls from going to university. However, she has now resumed her unfinished education at one of the online universities.

She says: “The closure of universities has taken away my hope and motivation. I became isolated at home, and this situation deeply depressed me, but I was seeking a way out to be able to become hopeful about life again. Getting acquainted with one of the online universities helped me significantly and led me to return to my studies. Although it is not like traditional universities, it is better than unemployment and isolation.”

Sima wishes to graduate through the online university she is studying at and pursue her educational goals at the master’s level abroad at a reputable university.

Sanam Rahimi, another female student, is continuing her education online after the imposition of educational restrictions.

“For us girls who were left behind from going to university, online universities are a ray of hope to continue our studies and find salvation from unemployment and depression,” Sanam said.

Alongside the effectiveness of online universities, some girls believe that online teaching at home somehow leads to their isolation and diminishes their presence in society. According to them, girls can study better when the gates of universities and schools are open, they have a physical presence in and contribute significantly to it.

It is noteworthy that female students have been deprived of going to school for 918 days and the gates of universities have been closed to female students for over a year, yet some girls are eager for the imposed restrictions to be lifted so they can study and work again as they did in the past.
