The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that due to the ongoing restrictions on the right to education for girls in Afghanistan, over 330,000 Afghan girls have been left out of accessing secondary education in the new academic year.

According to this agency, the total number of female students who have been subject to the order prohibiting the right to education since 2021 exceeds 1.4 million, among whom 330,000 are girls who completed the sixth grade in 2021 and are not allowed to attend school in the new year of 2022 till now.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International has also reacted to the opening of schools without the presence of girls in the new academic year and stated that the Taliban’s excuses are “empty and aimed at further discrimination in Afghanistan.”

The organization has called for the reopening of girls’ schools to higher-grade students and, on the occasion of the start of the new academic year in Afghanistan, stated: “This is unjustifiable and a violation of fundamental human rights to education. The current government must allow girls of all ages to attend school and refrain from pessimistic excuses to advance their discriminatory agenda.”

Afghanistan has witnessed significant developments in the past two years, especially in the involvement of women and girls in society, with the deprivation of female students from education being one of the greatest challenges during this period.
