Afghan Women’s News Agency – After the universities gates were closed to girls in Afghanistan, a large number of female students were forced to drop out of school and lost their hope for a better future.

Maryam Timouri (pseudonym) is one of the students who has been banned from going to university in the third year of journalism. In the interview I had with her, she said: “Currently, girls in Afghanistan are not in a good mental condition, and until schools and universities are opened, the mental condition of girls will remain this way.”

I sat next to her and asked her about her current situation, as she was leaning on the wall and staring at a point, she said, “I lost all hope for the future with the closing of the universities. I always wanted to be a prominent journalist in the country and work more for women, but unfortunately we were denied our right to education and we spend our days and nights like the walking deads, away from all the dreams and goals we had.”

After the universities were closed, she had to go to a psychologist for several sessions due to her bad mental state.

“I was depressed from staying at home a lot, became aggressive and didn’t treat anyone right. All my hope for the future was lost and I felt that I had no other way but to die until I had to go to a psychologist to get better.”

In the past two years, the number of mental illnesses among the citizens of the country, especially among women and girls, has increased compared to any other time. Imposing restrictions and forcing girls to stay at home in Afghanistan is one of the biggest reasons.

In the continuation of her speech, Maryam says: “The future of women is currently unknown because there is no course, no school, no duty, and they banned women from everywhere, and the international community has not paid any attention to Afghan women. If we proceed in this way, the women who stay at home will deteriorate their mental condition even more, and it will even cause psychological problems for them, and this is very bad.”

The difficult situation for women in Afghanistan has made Maryam and others like her come to the conclusion that leaving Afghanistan can be the best option for them to live a better life.

In the last two years, Afghanistan has witnessed many changes, especially in the presence of women and girls in society, and the deprivation of female students and students from lessons and education is one of the biggest challenges during this period.
